On May 28, 1837, United States Col. Harney, in Florida, dispatched to General Thomas Sidney Jesup that “A party of negroes had surrendered who give information that Micanopy (an Indian) has been Abiake or Sam Jones disposed, and that Abiaca (sp) is now the principal chief of the nation- that the Indians had resolved not to emigrate, and would fight if the attempt was made to force them off.”
